Here are photos from Petropavlosk on Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. It sits above Japan and its declining population has only air and sea routes to connect it to the rest of the world. Russia still maintains a naval base in the area, which is its primary access to the Pacific Ocean. The civilian harbor is shallow, so cruise ships must anchor and then tender to shore. Unless you have your own visa for Russia, you must go on a designated tour, although there’s not much to see in the area. Our coach didn’t stop at any of the statues so any photos were through the window as we drove by.
